Untitled (Picture This)

Audio/visual installation, presented at Alpha-Ville Festival of Post-Digital Culture, London (2011)

This work is sound-responsive, that is, all the variation is generated from the sound of each quiet metronome 'tick'. The sound of each tick is amplified back through powerful speakers to create an immersive, beating rhythm. The tick sound is also 'heard' by software which responds by firing out a huge pattern across the room.

The piece was inspired by a moving poem, 'Picture This' written by Molly Pearson. Ours was the winning entry in the 'Patch Slam' competition (in association with Alpha-Ville, V4W and the Young Poets Network).

Molly's poem was full of rich, personalised imagery about memories of the past and the potential for the future. The installation presents a counterpoint, by not encroaching on the past or future, and instead making it's domain each passing moment of the present. Together the poem and the installation look for alternative perspectives on our relationship to time.
